Awesome state park! The visitor center and docents are really helpful, we also ate at the Lodge I believe the food was awesome. I would advise against bringing a stroller it's pretty rugged. We will be back to checkout the cabins next time!
A gem in Illinois, and reasonably close to the city for convenience and ease of travel. On busy days it certainly gets crowded, so if you have the choice definitely choose a weekday or quieter time on a weekend. Also, prepare yourself for the bugs near the water! Overall the hiking is moderate with total trail distance coming in under 15 miles, and the inclines only ever reaching a moderate difficulty which is rapidly alleviated by wooden stairs to assist. Perfect for a summer outing!
We only traveled an hour to get here so that part was great. We arrive a little before noon and had to pass to parking area that were deemed "FULL" we had to park so so far away and walk. When we arrived at the visitor center there were only porta potties to use and of course the one I went in had no tissue already. The information area outside is was very crowed and we're small, one one lady working, and long line to ask questions. We went in the trails and most of the time we ran into people who all seemed confused of how to get back to the visitor center. We did enjoy our lunch at the outside bar restaurant. The people we ran into on the trails were all pleasant. The two water fall areas were of course dry due to no rain which we understand and we enjoyed exploring those areas. Overall, the trails are very long, lots of stairs in most areas and not a lot to see except the bushes we were passing by at the time. If you enjoy walking to get lots of exercise this it a great place to go. If you like to site see and explore while walking this is not so much in my opinion.
Spent half a day exploring the park with friends. Easy and fun trail that led to waterfall and beautiful lake overlook. Bring a picnic (and friends)!
Great family-friendly activities and romantic too. Also great smokehouse in LaSalle called Haze best pulled pork after a long day of hiking.
